New Video Series Available: “Top Ten Things to Know about East Asia in the 21st Century”

The National Consortium for Teaching About Asia and Asia for Educators have launched a new “Top Ten” video series which begins with 7 programs on the Top Ten Things to Know about East Asia in the 21st Century. The video series is an efficient way to gain essential information about this most important world area directly from area experts at Columbia University. Each program runs 40 to 60 minutes and delivers content and context on East Asia today. Once a video is released it stays active on the website – so you can view on your own time. View one program or the entire series and deepen your understanding of current world events while also accessing new classroom material. More information is available here.

Summer 2015 Midwest Faculty Research Travel Grants–Applications Due May 1

Research Travel Grants, Summer 2015

The East Asian Studies Center at Indiana University (IU) will award a limited number of travel grants for summer 2015 to assist faculty at colleges and universities in the Midwest in their use of the East Asian Collection of the Herman B Wells Library, the special collections of the Kinsey Institute, the Lilly Rare Books and Manuscripts Collections, or other museums and libraries on campus. Grants of up to $300 will be awarded to help defray travel and living expenses.

The East Asian Collection houses more than 290,000 volumes in East Asian languages and subscribes to approximately 750 Chinese, Japanese, and Korean serials and newspapers and approximately 20 electronic resources focusing on East Asia. The general library collection includes approximately 221,000 volumes related to East Asian studies published in Western languages. The Kinsey Institute’s collections include rare books, scrolls, art, artifacts, photographs, and films on cultural and historical aspects of sexuality in East Asia. The Lilly Library houses the Charles Boxer Collection, which contains a unique set of manuscripts and documents on Japan’s early contact with the West.

All travel must be completed and receipts forwarded to the East Asian Studies Center for reimbursement within the summer term. (May 8th – August 21th) However, due to fiscal deadlines, it is encouraged that all receipts be submitted before August 7th, 2015. If specific questions, please contact Hye-Seung (Theresa) Kang.

CALL FOR PAPERS: MCAA Conference

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Washington University in St. Louis is pleased to host the 64th Annual Meeting of the Midwest Conference on Asian Affairs, October 16-18, 2015. The MCAA seeks to promote Asian studies both at the university and the secondary and primary levels and particularly to encourage scholarly interchange between Asianists located in the Midwest, though scholars from all regions are invited to participate.

Proposals are solicited for panels, roundtables, individual papers, posters, and “diamond presentations” in all fields dealing with East, South, and Southeast Asia, the Asian Diaspora, and topical and comparative panels. Faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, as well as independent Asianists, are encouraged to participate and attend.

Proposals are due May 31, 2015. Reviews of proposals will begin in June, and you will be contacted of the results by August 1, 2015, if not sooner. Persons presenting papers must be members of MCAA and should pre-register by August 31, 2015.

Indiana University Seeks Summer Host Families for Chinese Flagship Institute

Indiana University’s Flagship Chinese Institute Is Looking for Host Families!

Chinese are families needed to host small groups of 5-6 students for two Saturdays in June and July.

June 14:  Host families visit, begin around 12 pm

Interact with our students (American) in Chinese and help them learn about Chinese culture through sharing meals and dumpling making (materials provided and food cost covered by FCI).

July 26: Picnic with Host Families, begin around 12 pm

Interact with our students (American) in Chinese, share Chinese food, and have a fun picnic with FCI students, teachers and staffs (food cost covered by FCI).

Indiana University’s Flagship Chinese Institute is also looking for native Chinese speakers who are willing to give presentations on cultural traditions and customs (music, festivals, calligraphy, arts, games, etc.). Indiana University is Recruiting Chinese Language Tutors

Indiana University is hiring tutors for its Chinese Flagship Center

Job Description:

Meet with Flagship students once or twice per week (preferably twice) for one-on-one tutoring sessions lasting one hour. Focus on developing students’ oral-aural skills, providing assistance with reading and writing only as needed. Conduct sessions entirely in Chinese.

The IU Chinese Flagship Center will provide tutor training in the first week of the Fall 2014 semester.

Qualifications:

Volunteer Tutors are expected to:

• Be native Chinese speakers  OR close to native level;
• Be currently enrolled at IU Bloomington as an undergraduate or graduate student OR have completed at least a Bachelor’s degree; junior and senior undergraduates and graduate students preferred, sophomore undergraduate may be considered.
• Be high-achieving students in academic disciplines;
• Be mature, responsible, and willing to help others;
• Be committed to tutor for at least one semester;
• Be punctual and maintain a relatively fixed schedule throughout the semester;
• Hold tutorial sessions in an academic space.

Volunteer tutors with excellent performance will be strong candidates for future paid discipline mentor positions at the Chinese Flagship Center.

CALL FOR PAPERS

The Consortium for Asian and African Studies [CAAS] will hold its Fifth Annual Symposium at Columbia University in New York, on Friday and Saturday, October 3-4, 2014.  Graduate students and faculty of the seven CAAS member universities (Leiden, INALCO, SOAS, TUFS, NUS, Hankuk, and Columbia) are invited to submit proposals for papers that employ more than one disciplinary approach and/or one national setting in addressing their topic.

 This crossing of disciplinary or national lines can occur either in the work of an individual or in collaboration among several scholars treating a common topic from different disciplinary perspectives.  For the collective applications, the three to four participants are obliged to communicate with one another before the Symposium and revise their papers to take account of the contribution of the different disciplines and/or societies involved, rather than coming together and delivering side-by-side disciplinary or national approaches on the same theme.

All disciplines are welcome, as are comparisons across national boundaries within Asia and Africa or between Asian and African societies and societies elsewhere. In addition to the substance of the presentations, applicants should make clear the advantages and disadvantages of their particular disciplinary and/or comparative combination.

 Papers will be selected based on content and approach, potential for exchange among the participants, and benefits from including a broad range of topics and disciplines.  The papers will be grouped by themes into panels, which will be conducted as workshops, with 15-minute presentations by speakers, 10-minute remarks by commentators and as much discussion as possible among the participants and the audience.  Papers submitted to the organizers by September 20 will be made available to the audience at the Symposium.

 English is the language of the Symposium, and as in the past four CAAS Symposia, we especially welcome applications from graduate students and post-docs as well as from faculty members.

Applicants should send 1) a one-page proposal describing the topic and approach of the paper, especially with regard to disciplinary and/or national border-crossing, and  2) a curriculum vitae (1-2 pages maximum), combined in a single PDF document, which should sent as an e-mail attachment to CAAS.Columbia@gmail.com,

Applicants will be notified of their selection by the end of July, 2014.

 As in earlier CAAS Symposia, travel and accommodation expenses will be covered by home institutions.
